An interview with Anthropologie’s Executive Creative Director

Strange Closets has posted an excellent interview with Kristin Norris, Anthropologie’s Executive Creative Director. It’s a long article but well worth the read. Ms. Norris gives some compelling insight into the brand ideals that Anthropologie upholds. It reads as statement of fact rather than corporate lip service. Her personal rise within the company is also a really fun story — the company seems like a cool place to work.

Thanks for the heads-up on the interview. Kristin Norris seems like a very accessible person, and very interesting. I would have loved to see the first Anthropoogie store. A cafe? I am so glad ours doesn't have a cafe, I would have to visit more, and buy more. She mentions that the first store was part entertainment part shopping. Well, there isn't entertainment at our store, but there are friendly people, with a comfortable atmosphere. That is one of the main reasons I shop there. Way more inviting than J. Crew. OUr store has a great place for my husband and daughter to relax while I try on clothes. The only thing I disagree with, is the floor plan being a map. I miss a lot of items at my store. Sometimes a big store is a detriment. This is where a good relationship with an SA is important. Thanks again for the link.

I met Kristen Norris at market in NYC in 2003, she was with one of her womenswear buyers. He was one of the rudest people I've ever encountered, and she acted completely nonplussed by his behavior. When I saw their badges and who they worked for, I told them that my women's clothing store was inspired by their vision. Mr. Asshat said,"Well, you better watch out because we're going to be opening a store in your area soon." She smiled and said nothing. It was only recently that I started shopping there again.
