Email: anthro in our own words

Ever feel like Anthro is reading your mind? Or, uh, maybe it’s just me. Because last night I was in Macy’s searching for a swimsuit featured in the latest issue of Marie Claire…except apparently the suit has not hit stores yet. From the dressing I called Anthropologie’s Rockefeller Center store: “Do you carry swim in-store?” I asked. “Yes, we do!” The associate told me excitedly. Yay! “What time do you close?” “We closed 10 minutes ago.” Dang. I headed off to celebrate Cinco de Mayo without an Anthro detour.

And then today I get the latest anthro: in our own words email, which is all about swim. I am pleased with the swim shapes this year, which swimwear buyer Kim describes as:
“…lots of vintage-inspired swimsuits, asymmetrical swimsuits and swimsuits with special details like 3-D appliqués, ruffles, color-blocking and graphic prints.”

The part I didn’t like as much is how the shapes are inspired by what they saw on the runway. No, no Anthro. Have you forgotten the whole appeal of your brand? You don’t follow trends. You do not aspire to sell shapes like everyone else. Your dogma is whimsy, flowy, mildly Victorian-inspired. Not trendy, trendy, trendy. Please don’t forget that.

Also in the newsletter are the stores where you can try on swim. Which means if Rockefeller Plaza doesn’t work it out it’s down to 16th/5th I go.

Finally down at the bottom of the email is a featurette about the underwater shots in the latest catalogue. Whether you like the photos or are not a fan, the video is interesting look behind the scenes. I liked the style of the photos but did not care for them in the context of a clothing catalogue. Had the products been showcased again in more traditional views I would have been all for opening the book with some pretty underwater scenes.
