Madewell picks of the moment

Where am I doing my lunch break shopping these days? Madewell, of course. It seems like every time I go into the store there are new delights to try on, add to my wishlist and buy as needed. They even convinced me that crop tops like the Embroidered Tier Top ($70) seen above can work with the right high-waisted bottom. The top is shown here with one piece of this necklace set and this hat (which I tried on and found not very flattering in real life).

There’s a beautiful sense of joie de vivre at Madewell right now, and though some of their pieces don’t work on me, I still walk through the store with a sense of wonder and delight! Often I try on items that I doubt will flatter me only to find that they do! What are some of the new pieces catching my eye?

A Madewell trick I love is taking matching separates and wearing them together — or apart. While it’s certainly not an idea original to them it’s something they’ve done incredibly well the last few years. You’ll see the top from this set again below.

Madewell also takes the cake when it comes to layering ideas. They’re the ones that first convinced me this year that a sweater tank could work in summer (and on chiller mornings, it’s a nice comfort). The fun sense of color mixing continues in the next couple of outfits.

What could be a simple (and perhaps boring) dress gets a little extra touch from Madewell here, courtesy of buttons down each side. This dress would be equally fun to wear as a super long tank top — shorts underneath and the buttons left open all the way down perhaps?

It’s one of several Madewell dresses new to my wishlist, along with the Embroidered Jardin Midi Dress ($158), the Embroidered Primrose Dress ($158) and the Quilted Side-Tie Dress in Moroccan Desert ($148).

Dresses aren’t the only area Madewell’s having fun experimenting with. How cool is the White Denim Button-Front Top ($72), shown here with the Converse® Chuck Taylor All Star High-Top Sneakers in Denim Daisy ($75)? It looks one part safari vest, one part corset top, and one part very fun to wear! The model’s Fluidform Statement Earrings ($34) also get high marks from me!

Likewise, Madewell’s accessories tend to skew towards the very fun to wear side. I love the new stately The HorseTM Original Watch ($120), shown here with a bracelet I love that doesn’t seem to be online yet.

The stores make things very easy for me, showing off lots of cute outfits on their mannequins. Below are a few of my recent favorites.

Ahhh, outfit perfection made simple! Here are my Madewell picks of the moment, what are yours?

I think that bracelet is the Guideline, a collaborative with designer Maslo, nice stuff!
I have enough clothes, I'm enjoying adding accessories this year!

I totally get that! New accessories are such an easy and delightful way to freshen up an outfit. ?

Madewell isn't generally my style, but once in awhile I find a winner. I recently bought the embroidered primrose dress. It runs big, but it's the perfect breezy summer dress.

    • June 22, 2017 / 10:30 am

Understood. I think they have a unique way of marrying left coast chic and casual urban in a way that pleases me. But I understand that they have a narrower appeal than, say, Gap.

Omg, I'm obsessed with Madewell right now! I have two of their Highpoint dresses (so flattering and comfy!), I have the embroidered primrose dress (definitely size down). And I just ordered a pair of shorts! I love their aesthetic, it's so effortless and comfy. What I don't like is some of their stuff is way too cropped/short for me and I'm not really on the high waisted jean/short/pant train so then I can't wear it! I sometimes wish their tops were just 2-3 inches longer. And I'm short and the tops are still short on me! Great picks roxy!

Madewell is mostly miss for me. However, I do like that cute tank and the white denim button front top. I also like the Starlight Side-Tie Dress.

Yup, those are very cute picks Melodie!

Do we know why Madewell stop offering promotions? They even had no promo for Memorial Day weekend. Are they doing that well?

no promo for memorial day weekend, and I don't think there has been a percentage off sale in store for a month or more. when I spoke with a madewell SA about it she said they are trying to do fewer percentage off sales but have deeper cuts when items are marked down to sale to begin with, so I think they are really trying to distance themselves from how j. crew is CONSTANTLY doing pricing games. in addition, madewell recently changed their online return policy from 60 days to 30 days. it's a little disappointing, but I do still love madewell overall, so I guess this is just our new reality.

    • June 22, 2017 / 10:32 am

I do think Madewell is doing that well! Luckily Madewell is also carried at Nordstrom and Shopbop so you have multiple chances to catch some stuff on promotion or sale!

I love the look of Madewell shoes, but the soles have absolutely no give/cushioning. Such a bummer. I would buy them all the time if they only had a thin insole to provide a tiny bit of cushioning.

    • June 22, 2017 / 10:33 am

Really? I find that they are some of the most comfy shoes, they seem to match my arches perfectly. I'm so sorry to hear that they don't work for you.

Huh, that is interesting. Maybe I have to try some more styles. The sandals I have checked out basically seemed a piece of cardboard with leather straps.

I haven't purchased anything at Madewell in over a year, but I did just pick up the Valley Sweater Tank in persimmon, a lovely bold red. https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/AllPro
Madewell's colors are just too dull lately, so this was a nice twist. I do love their shoes and purses. I agree with Simone a bit of shoe cushioning would be a bonus.

    • June 22, 2017 / 10:34 am

I have the Valley Sweater Tank in a misty green color from Winter and I'm still wearing it all the time! I love that top.

OT but when is Anthropologie's tag sale?

I was gonna guess tomorrow since they have been starting it on a Thursday. But the additional 25% off is still running, so I am not sure. Maybe next Thursday. 🙂

Just purchased the vacances shift dress for $44.97 at Nordstrom rack online. They have all sizes available. On the Madewell website, they are still $88.00

I saw that last week and was surprised by that as well! I called madewell and ask if they price match with their competitors, and they do not, so nordstrom rack seems like the best choice right now to grab this dress – especially because as you noted, they have the full size range available.

Are you done blogging about Anthro? I know you wanted to branch out but I'm surprised you missed Anthro Day and that dress promo.

    • June 22, 2017 / 10:37 am

No. But here's the deal, I'm not liking what Anthro's producing right now. So naturally I am going to write about them much less. I'm not into blogging about stuff I don't like and never have been. My editorial calendar is not based on who wants to send me free stuff and I'm not going to lie and say I love something I don't.

I am very much pulling for Anthropologie to turn it around, and page two of my blog (at the moment) has 3 Anthro posts alone! There are just other retailers offering much better stuff and so that is where my eyes and money are going.

It looks like the "Tag Sale" is up. No % off sale yet, but lots of new markdowns

Remember when the Tag Sale generated major anticipation and excitement? The lack of enthusiasm is certainly indicative of how far off the mark Anthro is these days. Sad.

    • June 22, 2017 / 10:37 am

Yup. Couldn't have said it better.

Nothing for me. The only things I would think of buying are not included. So sad.

  17. June 22, 2017 / 9:39 am

Hi all! I will respond to all comments above in a bit — working on a Tag Sale post right now!

I've been traveling a ton for work through various time zones and I'm jet-lagged up the wazoo right now. ?
