OOTD: The Beautiful Commute

Commuting to work can be stressful…or it can be easy, effortless and fun! The Q train stops on the newΒ 2nd Ave subway line here in Manhattan illustrate that. So does Madewell’s glorious Spring 2017 line! Wrapping up my series of Madewell Spring outfits (for now!), let’s take a walk on the colorful side.

Jacket: AG Jeans (also available via 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) | Dress: Madewell | Shoes: Boden
Necklace: Madewell | Bag: Chloe (other colors here, here, hereΒ and here)
Earrings: Anthropologie (old, similar) | Rings: Anthropologie

The new 2nd Ave subway line is bright and airy compared to many of the older train stops, and the most beautiful part of all has to be the mezzanines between street level and train platform. At each of the three new stations the MTA commissioned an artist to leave their mark on the expansive hallways. At 86th Street, artist Chuck Close created mosaic versions of some of his renowned portraits, painstakingly detailed close-up shots of people both famous and ‘ordinary.’ Standing next to these 9-foot tall mosaics one can’t help but marvel at the magnificence of color and silhouette.

Beauty comes in all forms, from artwork as self-expression to outfits! I’m a big fan of using my clothing as a means to communicate to the world — to share my cheery, vivid outlook on life and invite people to know just a bit about who I am based on what I wear.

This year I’ve been quite taken by Madewell’s Spring clothing, with its warm color palette, excellent mix of neutrals and killer denim! It’s been fun teaming up with them for this series of outfit posts and visiting the store many times over to revel in what’s new and works well together. This red banana dress is ostensibly a beach cover up, but it works great as a day dress (or a Friday work dress in my casual office environment!)

Part of my frustration with retailers lately has been how hard they make it to see outfits, whether by releasing way too much stuff or not helping the customer to see how pieces work together. At Madewell I never have these problems — from inspiring store mannequins and outfit hangers to clothing in a complementing palette, shopping there is fun and rewarding! Two things I love to say about clothing.

Here are my other posts in this series:
OOTD: I like the way you move
OOTD: Spring whites
OOTD: Blues & Greens Forever
OOTD: Warm hues and sunny days

And below are some of my favorite Madewell items, including sale goodies! From these 35 items in this boutique you can easily make a bevy of pretty outfits which will be flattering and chic. So many of us love Madewell in this community! What are your favorite items there right now? What have you bought and loved?

Is it possible to get a 25% off PA on things I bought in the last 14 days that were 30% off?

    • March 23, 2017 / 11:09 am

As in stack the discounts? No. If not I'm not sure I understand your question, can you elaborate or give an example of what you mean?

    March 23, 2017 / 2:41 pm

I was talking about what Guest said. I bought some things at 30% off during the last promotion and the current price at 25% off is now lower (no PA's were given the first time and the actual sale prices of the items are still the same). I called CS and they said I couldn't have the 25% off also. Not sure if I should call again? Or is what I'm asking considered stacking?

      March 23, 2017 / 2:51 pm

I just called again to see if I could get a further 25% off the things I got 30% off of less than 14 days ago (no PAs of any kind were done on those orders) and they said no. Is that correct?

      • Dina
        March 23, 2017 / 2:52 pm

I guess by current price you mean the current full price Guest? Like if the price was $29.95 and is still $29.95 I can't get the extra 25% off?

      • Stefanie
        March 23, 2017 / 3:01 pm

If the actual selling price is still the same as it was when you got the 30 off, you can't stack another 25 off on top of the 30.

          March 23, 2017 / 3:31 pm

I just did it on my 3rd try, so I guess you can do it.

            March 23, 2017 / 3:32 pm

            Thanks though!

Now I'm thinking maybe that 3rd person who gave me the PA was wrong and it won't end up going through. It was only one order so that's okay. Thanks for all the replies.

          • Guest
            March 24, 2017 / 2:19 pm

A PA is a return and repurchase only valid within 14 days. So they'll just sell it to you for what it's currently going at and your card will be credited the difference. As former employee, be kind and realize that with these promotions stores are busy and they don't have enough staff/registers to do PAs over the phone. You just need to bring in your receipt and hop in line πŸ™‚

I was calling the 800 CS number for online PAs, not the store, but thanks Guest. I was totally incorrect about thinking I could get another 25% off after I got 30% off and the sale price hadn't gone down (had a momentary lapse of sanity lol).

    March 23, 2017 / 3:00 pm

I have another question. If I bought something on sale at 30% off and then the actual price of the item gets reduced further and there's also 25% off that lower price, do I get the new lower price plus the 25% off when I ask for a PA? I was under the impression that was what I was getting in the past and haven't checked all my PA's on my credit card statement yet.

I would be more excited if there was anything on sale that I wanted. I'll save my $ and wait for some newer tops to hit sale eventually.

Cute outfit! I wish we had a train station here to commute to various places. I'm a SAHM now for a while but when I was working I drove since it was in the city and I lived in the outskirts.

    • April 29, 2017 / 1:23 pm

Thank you Kristina! The subway is certainly a bonus, I lived for a bit in a few cities that had none and it always feels a bit weird to me to have to drive everywhere!

Love the color combo in this OOTD! I also adore the red skirt in the pics. That is so sweet yet powerful!

I love the print on this dress. You look great! Does madewell run smaller than anthropologie? I'm usually a 6/s in anthro, should I go with a med in this dress?

    • April 28, 2017 / 4:46 pm

No I'd size down, the dress is very roomy!

Thank you for the new thoughts! I am loving the new block heel sandals for summer, but I don't want them too high…I want a lower heel that will dress up summer dresses and skirts. Hard to find.

    • April 29, 2017 / 1:27 pm

Nordstrom also has so many block heel styles of varying heights!

Love Madewell and actually just bought a pair of jeans there yesterday! I love their online store, because it has so much more than the little store at our local mall!

    • May 1, 2017 / 5:02 pm

Agree Karen! Even here in NYC where the stores are pretty big, there is so much more available online.

  26. April 29, 2017 / 11:02 am

  35. April 30, 2017 / 2:23 pm

The shoes are so cute, and really do make your entire outfit pop + look so chic! Sometimes I wish I had a commute via underground or train, but I just drive 15 minutes to work everyday! xx

    • May 1, 2017 / 5:05 pm

15 minutes is so not bad though! I love how walkable NYC is, but now living in Brooklyn it's either biking or subway to work for me. The bike ride over the Manhattan Bridge is beautiful.

Madewell happens to be one of my favorite clothing stores. I love how simple and classic their style is and how “well made” the clothes are. I loved your outfit and enjoyed how you took photos in the subway! I live in JC so NY is only a short drive of path ride away and this totally inspired me to snap some pics in the subway next time I travel to the city. Love your style!

    • May 1, 2017 / 5:07 pm

Yay!! I think you'll have a great time photo'ing in the subway.
