Doing some birthday haulin’ at Free People…

The slightly oversized Embellished Military Shirt Jacket ($168) is incredibly soft,
and, in my mind, the perfect length. Runs TTS.

Apologies for the off-time posts these last few days; I’ve taken advantage of a lull in my biggest work project to take some OOTD photos for my Instagram with some great photographers! They should be going live beginning late next week and I hope you’ll follow along…I don’t post all my OOTDs on the blog so Instagram is the place to see how I’m styling some of my closet. You can expect to see some of the items mentioned in this post in upcoming OOTDs!

With that out of the way…

Thanks to some serious doses of pretty designs recently, and collections that easily color coordinate, I surprised even myself this year by putting the majority of my birthday haul cash into Free People goodies! Though perhaps it’s no surprise at all…for hidden among the insane boho are an abundance of real gems, from body-skimming tops with sleek appearances to looser flowy items that aren’t too boxy or short.

Armed with two majorly generous gift cards, here’s what I delighted in at Free People…

The No Looking Back Washed Cami ($38) only comes in two sizes, but it has a lot of give to it.
I purchased the larger size in two colors.

My goal for my trip to Free People was to come out with as many outfits as I could, and I think I succeeded in large degrees. I already own more than enough bottoms so tops and toppers were my thinking, along with some bags to spice things up. Free People offers 15% off one purchase during your birthday month when you have website login with them. (You can sign up here, it’s free. Make sure you fill in your birthday information!)

The haul looks something like this:
1 | The Embellished Military Shirt Jacket ($168, TTS) topping this post in the black color shown, which is pre-faded into a dark grey. I looooooove how soft this jacket is! There are some reviews on FP’s site which note that the arm beading may fall off. I inspected all the jackets in-store and chose the one that looked to be in best condition…all of them looked pretty good to me. It’s nice and long in back, hitting just below my butt, and slightly shorter in front. I expect to wear this a lot. I took a medium.
2 | What will I wear under it? I want to keep some of my ideas a surprise for OOTD time, but for surely one top under it will be the Upstate Stripe Tee ($68, TTS) in the ‘beige combo’ which reads beige and grey-blue to me. I didn’t realize this top has a banded hem until I tried it on, but over leggings the hem is perfection! The muted colors work great with the military jacket and the v-neck is not too deep on — nothing revealed. I took a medium in this too.
3| The No Looking Back Washed Cami ($38, TTS) is a form-fitting mockneck tank with lots of give to it. Not stretch, give. The difference to me is this didn’t loosen up over the course of the day, but it did give enough for me to fit into it comfortably. Make sense? It comes in a variety of colors but just two sizes…I do kinda wish there’d been a XL size, but the M/L works. I bought it in two colors and it will pair nicely with…
4 | …the Twin City Vegan Crossbody ($30) which came home with me in two colors. This purse is indeed tiny — think phone, a few keys and a few cards or bills, and not much else — but makes up for that small form by being versatile and ready to cross your body in the most flattering way. I love that some colors have a silvery chain and some have a gold chain. I can’t comment on the long-term quality but the zippers worked fine for me in-store.
5 | One much more functional bag that came home with me is the Seville Vegan Satchel ($68), an ideally sized bag with lots of pockets, zip pockets and slots. I ended up getting the black as I think it will be the most versatile color, but the pink was seriously tempting me too.
6 | I couldn’t resist one more bag, namely the Triple Pocket Slouchy Tote ($68) I’ve been eyeing for quite awhile in the gravely ‘evergreen’ color. The tote is about the size of a laptop with one large middle zip pocket and two good-sized outer snap pockets. There’s also a removable lunch clutch — you know, the little strappy wristlet you keep your work lunch money in for breaktime so you don’t have to drag the entire tote around with you.
7 | Yesterday on my Instagram I posted one combination of the We The Free Pacific Thermal ($68, TTS) with the Galloon Lace Halter Bra ($20, TTS) in a complementing color. I’ve also seen the top with the Galloon Lace Racerback ($20, I size down to a small) in a complementing color (i.e. the ‘shiraz’ color of the top with the ‘ballet’ color of the bra) and it’s such a pretty idea! The v on this top is quite deep so you’ll see much of the halter of the bra. An alternate idea would be to wear a cami underneath such as the Skinny Strap Brami ($20) or The Crossfire Cami ($30). I was quite torn on what size to get in the top, between a medium and large, but ultimately decided on the medium because it was less boobalicious. The arms on the top are surprisingly tight but I’m told they do loosen with wear.
8 | I’d actually picked these up pre-birthday, but I do want to mention how lovely the Rock Steady Choker ($38) and Mia Triple Delicate Choker ($78) are…though I don’t think the latter is quite an $80 piece, so I recommend waiting for a sale on it.
9 | Although the reviews about the color rubbing off scare me, I couldn’t help but buy the lovely For Eternity Choker ($38). I will update on how it holds up!
10 | It’s sold out online at the moment, but the Prism Bun Pin ($20) seemed much too fun to pass up.
11 | Likewise, the Two Faced Leather Mix Bolo ($88) which may go back if I can’t figure out what to wear it with.
12 | I already own the Mystic River Sunglasses ($25) in one color — they’re on me in the round about photo in the sidebar — and decided to add a second color to my collection.

I’m excited to share many of these items in upcoming OOTDs! You can see what I got from Anthropologie in this recent post (though the sale mentioned in that post is now over).

What have you bought and loved from Free People recently?

Can't wait to see you in the beaded military shirt! And oh I loooove the Seville Satchel in the pink. Not too practical for a color in a purse but sooo pretty.

I know! If I could just figure out how to keep it clean (not sure the leather protectant I use would work since it's not leather…) I would get it!

The beaded Military shirt is really cool. I wish it came in indigo blue.

I just got a 20% off coupon from FP because they botched my order. There are so many things I want it's too hard to narrow down. 🙂

Ohhhhh 20% off!! I would eat that up in a heartbeat.

community opinion please…bought the nadia leather moto jacket (suede) but was not sure how versatile it will be and how to style …keep or return? Im mom of two young boys in my mid 30s. Thanks!

You may want to repost this once I have a new post up, not sure it will get as many eyes in a FP post. 🙂

I think lighter brown leather jackets are more versatile, but I do think you could wear that over a crisp white tee or long sleeve shirt, red, purple, and blues (lighter blues especially)! If you feel comfortable wearing it to do errands I'd say keep.

You're welcome! I will have a new Anthro post up tomorrow if you want to wait to ask again there, though you are of course welcome to post in the BR post too.
